Chennai, September 11, 2026: More than 110 alumni of Madras Medical College (MMC) came together at the institution’s iconic 129-year-old red-brick heritage building, popularly known as the ‘Red Fort’, to relive their cherished memories and celebrate 50 years since they began their medical journey.
The doctors, who entered MMC in 1976, travelled from various parts of India and across the world to participate in the golden jubilee celebration of their college days. The building, constructed in Indo-Saracenic style, had housed the Department of Anatomy for several decades.
For the doctors, the journey began during one of the most turbulent periods in modern Indian history. Yet, amid the political uncertainty of the time, the students remained focused on their ambition. They received rigorous training and guidance from some of the most eminent teachers.
Adding a meaningful social dimension to the celebrations, the alumni joined hands with the Rotary Club of Madras Esplanade to sponsor five pink autos, each valued at Rs 1.75 lakh, for destitute mothers. The initiative, spearheaded by the group’s Organising Chairman, Dr. Mahender, was aimed at helping underprivileged women achieve financial independence and build sustainable livelihoods.The autos will be handed over to the women by Past District Governor Rtn. Chandra Mohan, in the presence of veteran filmmaker Suresh Krissna on Saturday.
Speaking about the reunion, Dr. Mahender said, “Fifty years ago, we came to Madras Medical College as young students with dreams in our eyes and a determination to serve. Today, returning to the same institution as doctors, we realise how deeply it has shaped our lives. This reunion is not merely about looking back. It is about giving back. By helping these women become self-reliant, we hope to carry forward the spirit of service that our teachers and this great institution instilled in us.”
The golden jubilee reunion has become more than a celebration of nostalgia. It was a tribute to the institution that shaped generations of doctors and an opportunity for its alumni to give back to society in a meaningful way.
